Method and sources

VO2 = 0.2 × speed + 0.9 × speed × grade + 3.5 mL/kg/min · net kcal = kg × km × (1 + 4.5 × grade)

ACSM running oxygen-cost equation with about 5 kcal per litre of oxygen. Speed is metres/minute and grade is a fraction. Movement energy excludes rest; total adds the 3.5 mL/kg/min resting term. This estimate supports running at 8-30 km/h and uphill grades 0-15%; it does not model downhill, wind, terrain, walking or individual economy. It estimates energy use, not a weight-loss target or food allowance.
